XC Update - High Altitude Camp/Dart Challenge

Darts -
I am writing you from the hospital. A lot of you know that Stefanie, my wife, had our 2nd baby yesterday morning. They are both doing great. Stef has handled it well, and is already ready to run a 5k (okay, maybe not quite, but she has been really strong through it all). We have decided to name the baby Samantha Colleen Talley. She was born at 7:30am yesterday (08/08/08). She was 6 pounds 6 ounces and 19 inches long at birth. Her hair is a light brown color right now, but when the sun is coming in through the window, you can see some red in there :) So far she has been a good eater and has been very content most of the time. She is cute like her mom. We are really blessed. Thanks for all the words of encouragement and for all the support you have shown.
High Altitude Camp was a huge success. Although I wasn't able to be there the entire time, I was extremely pleased with the teamwork and the positive feel that the camp had to it. I think we are in for an exciting season for both the boys and the girls. I will write about some of the highlights of the camp (including mile repeats, Red Castle, the 1-5 game, and some of the awards I wasn't able to present) and I will post some pictures on the blog later on (www.davisxcpics.blogspot.com). Thanks to all of you who made the camp possible. Special thanks to Steve Petty for all the work he put into it and for the use of his ginormous trailer, his movie projector, his water tanks, his water filters, his cooking gear, his dutch ovens, and many other things, as well as his supervision most of the time. Thanks to Brad for the entertainment and for the story of his childhood and for helping me shop and for the nicknames. Thanks to Janae for coming up Monday to Wednesday even though she is pregnant and was sick with the flu on Sunday and had to come home just to leave for girls camp Thursday through Saturday. Janae has done an incredible job coaching and sacrificing for all of us. Thanks to Coach Buhrley for the work he put into the camp and for creating it and keeping it going in the first place. We still miss him a lot and it is nice to spend time with him again. Thanks to the Syracuse team for joining us and adding to the fun. Thanks to all the parents who took the time to drive to and from camp (I will still get you some gas money - missed giving it to you on the way up because of car trouble and on the way back because I wasn't around, but I will send that home with your kids). Thanks to the Wards for donating all of the ice and the fruit. Thanks to our graduates who joined us and helped out (Spencer, Natalie, Erica, and Ryan) they will always be part of our TEAM, and it was fun to spend some more time with them. And thanks to each of the Davis athletes for running hard during the week, for growing closer as a TEAM, for cleaning up after yourselves (some of the time), for helping with the cooking, and for your personalities, commitment, and teamwork. Because of everyone's efforts, this was one of the best camps I've been a part of.

We have some important things coming up:
This weeks workouts -
Monday - Vita Course @ 7:00am - I will not be there, but Janae will be.
Tuesday - Meet at Davis High @ 7:00am for some intervals on the grass at Nichols Park. I should be there.
Thursday - Meet at Barnes Park @ 7:00am on the East Side of the park.
Saturday - Dart Challenge 5k @ Barnes Park. The race is at 8:00am, but be there by 7:15. We will do a TEAM warmup. I will hand out the registration forms on Tuesday and Thursday. You can give them to me with $15 on Thursday or Saturday morning at the race. We will need a few parents to help with the food and with race registration and timing if any of your parents want to help, let me know. Also, let me know if you are not going to be at the race - I would like to see EVERYONE there. You can also register online at www.runnercard.com or in person at Strider's in Layton.

First Meet of the Year - Grass Relays at American Fork - Saturday, August 30. The entire season schedule is posted on the blog. I will email it out again soon.

Thanks again for everything - keep running hard. We are now getting to the more intense part of our summer training. I expect everyone to put a little more effort into pushing themselves and into doing the little things that are going to make us better. Email me your mileage (some of you are missing a couple of week's worth). If you are unsure about what to count any of the camp workouts for, I will figure those out for you. The boys were about 100 miles behind the girls with the last updates.

See you soon
Coach Talley

ps. I messed up last weeks email. It was Sarah Oldham (not Goldman) who ran in the Baer Gutsman Race (not sure what I was thinking there). And I forgot to mention Keigunn Kunz who ran awesome as well.

pps. If you want to see some pictures of Samantha - they will be posted later today on www.corbinandstef.blogspot.com

Cross Country Update - August 3rd

Darts -
An extremely short update this week. It is the week of high altitude camp. For those of you who are going, be ready for some tough workouts. For those of you not going, set a goal to have a solid week of training. Hopefully next year we will be able to take as many as want to go (but you will still have to earn it). In case you don't have the workout paper, here is what I would like to see this week:
Monday - 6 mile trail run
Tuesday - 8 x 400 (or 90 seconds) on an uphill slope - jog or walk down for recovery
Wednesday - 3-5 mile run
Thursday - 3 mile tempo run (faster than your normal training pace) plus 4 x 600m (or 2 minutes) on the grass
Friday - 3-5 mile run
Saturday - 6 mile run

The next workouts as a team will be:
Monday, 8/11 - 7am - Vita Course
Tuesday, 8/12 - 7 am - @ Davis High
Thursday, 8/14 - 7am - Barnes Park (on the east side of the park)
Saturday, 8/16 - Dart Challenge - race starts at 8:00am. You are all expected to run the race unless you are going to be out of town. Let me know if you can't make it to the race. It is a team fundraiser and also a team time trial. Treat it like our first race of the season.

Baer Gutsman - Nice job to Kye Kunz, Brooke Stromberg, Sarah Goldman, and Drew Rees who completed the challenging Crazy Bob Baer Gutsman 11 mile mountain Race last Saturday.

Keep Running -
Coach Talley

ps. Send me your miles :)

Cross Country Update - July 26

Darts,
Another week of the summer is gone. I am sure you are all excited to get back to school :)

I know that I am always talking about doing little things to take care of yourselves. Everyone needs to make an effort to do these things the rest of the summer and into the season. This is what I mean:
SLEEP - Try to get 7-8 hours per night. I know this is hard, especially in the summer, but it can be done. Don't stay up all night texting or playing video games. Also, if you can, a nap in the afternoon will help you recover from a hard run.
EATING - You have to fuel the engine. You need to get the proper amounts of the proper foods in your diet. Fruits, Vegetables, whole grains, pasta, fish, chicken, and red meat. For snacks try things like apples, peanut butter, raisins, and nuts. Pizza or fast food are fine as long as it is not every day.
HYDRATING - 8 to 10 glasses of water a day plus sports drinks and juices.
SHOES - make sure that you are not running in a pair of shoes too long. I know that new shoes can be expensive, but it is a huge part of preventing injury. I think about 400 miles or 3-4 months is good use out of a pair of shoes.
GOALS - set some goals for yourself. Try setting some goals for the last 5 weeks of the summer. For some of you that might be to run 5 or 6 days a week. It might be to run 25 or more miles each of the last 5 weeks. For some of the experienced runners it might be to hit around 40 miles each of the last 5 weeks. Also be thinking about your goals for the season. Our TEAM goal is to win another region and state championship for both the boys and the girls. Try writing your goals down and putting them in a place you can see them.

Let's finish the summer off strong and be ready for a fun and successful season.

Deseret News 10k -
Nice Job to the boys and the girls teams in their Deseret News 10k performance on the 24th. We had 5 girls and 6 boys in the race. On the girls side, the team took 3rd behind the Utah All-Stars and the U.S. All-Stars. We were led by Natalie Haws who finished 2nd in the high school division and 20th overall for females with a time of 37:37. Loren Storey finished 10th in the high school division with 41:49. Meghan Hedquist was 11th with 41:53. Emily Hansen was 13th with 42:09. And Hollie King finished with a time of 43:06. A great showing for our girls.
On the boys side, the team finished 5th behind the U.S. All-Star team, 2 Utah All-Star teams, and the team from Alta. Seth Gutzwiller finished 10th with a time of 42:44. Carston Feigleson was 16th in 35:31. Derek Gallacher was 20th in 37:02. Kye Kunz ran 41:09, Spencer Anderson ran 41:42, and Brad Frye finished in 45:29.
Former Dart Morgan Haws finished in 9th place among females in a time of 35:04. Nice Job to all who ran.

Upcoming Practices:
Monday 28th - 7:00 am at the Vita Course
Tuesday 29th - 7:00 am at Davis
Thursday 31st - 7:00 am at Layton Park

The Dart Challenge 5k (our TEAM race and fundraiser) will be on August 16th at 8:00am - more details later.

If any of you would like to read the long report of the Wasatch Back Relay (and see some photos soon to be posted), you can go to wasatchbackdavis.blogspot.com It is mostly a report of the girls race, with a little bit about the boys as well.

Cross Country Update July 19

Darts -
A very short update today. I hope your training is going well on the days that we don't meet as a team. Make sure you are doing the little things that are going to help a lot in the long run - especially abs and taking good care of yourself (diet, sleep, hydration). Keep having fun and working hard! If you are going on vacation, just do the best that you can to get a workout in, and try to have a little fun (we'll miss you at practice though).
Reminders:
1. Send me your mileage - some of you are still missing previous weeks.
2. Upcoming TEAM Workouts:
Monday (21st) - trails, 7am
Thursday (24th) - no organized practice. Some of you will be running the Deseret News 10k (I had a dream this morning that Leland won the Deseret News Marathon).
Monday (28th) - trails, 7am
Tuesday (29th) - Davis, 7am
Thursday (31st) - Layton Park, 7am
3. Camp - August 4-8 - Will be $90 instead of $80 (because of gas). If you have not given me the parent waiver and first $40, try to bring that on Monday. The rest of the money and the physicals are due by July 31st.
4. Dart Challenge 5k - August 16th 8:00am at Barnes Park - I will be handing out registration forms pretty soon.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend.
Coach Talley
